UTTAM KUMAR

Uttam Kumar was an actor of par excellence who portrayed numerous main roles brilliantly in Bengali films and earned the title as 'Maha Nayak'(Great Hero).He predominantly appeared in Bengali films but also acted in a few Hindi films.He was amazingly good  suited for both commercial and parallel films.He always tried to make his roles as perfect as possible.He was very much dedicated to his acting profession, and  was very hardworking who worked without caring about his own health.He was the top actor of Bengali language those days and dominated  for three decades in that position.He earned prestige and fame as an actor,director,singer,composer and producer.

Uttam Kumar was born on 3rd September 1926 in Calcutta as Arun Kumar Chatterjee.He joined as a Clerk at the Calcutta Port Trust after his studies and in those period he used to act in amateur plays.His first role was as the hero of the film 'Mayador' which never released.
His first film was 'Drishtidan' in 1948, in Bengali which was directed by Nitin Bose.
In 1951 'Nashtaneer' was a film directed by Pashupati Chatterjee in which Sunanda Banerji was the female lead.
In the film 'Sharey Chuattar' of 1952 Suchitra Sen acted opposite to him.
'Agni Pareeksha' was a super hit film of 1954 in which Suchita Sen was the heroine and later this pair appeared in so many films as they were  liked by the audience and producers considered them as a successful pair.
Some of their well noted films are 'Agni Pareeksha' Shapmochan,Sagarika,Shilpi,Harano Sur,Indrani' etc.
Uttam Kumar was successful also with heroines like 'Aparna Sen,Supriya Choudhary,Sabitri Chatterjee,Sharmila Tagore,Mala Sinha' etc.
In the film 'Maya Mriga' in 59, Sandhya Roy and Biswajit acted along with him.
In the film 'Saptapadi' Suchitra Sen was the heroine and Chhabi Biswas,Tarun Kumar,Pahari Sanyal etc acted.
In the film 'Jhinder Bandi' directed by Tapan Sinha, Sandhya Roy,Saumitra Chattopadhyay,Tarun Kumar etc acted along with him.
In the film 'Uttar Falguni' directed by Asit Sen, Suchitra Sen was the heroine.
In 1966 he acted in the main role of the film 'Nayak' by Satyajit Ray in which Sharmila Tagore was the female lead.
In the same year he acted in another film 'Chiriya Khana'(The Zoo) which was also directed by Satyajit Ray.


'Antony Firingee' was a super hit film in which Tanuja was the heroine in the year 1967.Uttam Kumar received National award as Best actor for

Supriya Devi and Chhaya Devi acted along with Uttam Kumar in the film 'Sabarmati'(69).
In 1974 Shakti Samanta directed a Hindi film 'Amanush' in which Uttam Kumar was the hero and Sharmila Tagore was heroine.
Shakti Samanta directed another Hindi film with Uttam Kumar in lead role 'Anand Ashram' which was a critical and commercial successful Hindi romantic film that contained beautiful songs.Sharmila Tagore was the heroine and Ashok Kumar,Moushumi Chatterjee,Utpal Dutt,Rakesh Roshan etc acted along with him.
'Kitab' was a nice Hindi film directed by Gulzar in the year 1977 in which Vidya Sinha,Shriram Lagoo and Master Raju acted.
Uttam Kumar directed and acted in lead role of the film 'Kalankini Kankabati' in which Mithun Chakraborty,Supriya Devi etc also acted.Sharmila Tagore was the heroine.
In the Hindi film 'Desh Premee' directed by Man Mohan Desai, he also acted along with Amitabh Bachchan,Hema Malini,Sharmila Tagor,Parveen Babi,Shammi Kapoor etc.
When Uttam Kumar expired at the age of 53 it was a shock to the film industry and the news media.Satyajit Ray said that it was the light of Bengali Cinema that demised.Many other co stars,directors and producers praised his acting skill,determination workaholic nature,devotion for perfection etc.
Awards
He received Certificate of Merit in 1961 for the film Saptapadi,
National film award for the Best Feature film in Bengali 'Uttar Falguni'(As producer).
He received National Award as Best actor for the films 'Chiriyaghana' and 'Antony Firingee' in 1968.
He received seven Best Actor Awards from Bengal Film Journalists' Association for the movies 'Hrod,Saptapadi,Nayak,Grihadaha,Ekhana Pinjar,Amanush,Bahnisikha'.He got awards from Government of Best Bengal and several other organisations also.
Death
Uttam Kumar had a heart attack while acting for the film 'Ogo Bodhu Shundori' in 1980 and he died on July 24, 1980 at Tollygung,Kolkata.

YUSAFALI KECHERI

Yusafali Kecheri was a highly acclaimed Poet,Lyricist,Director,Producer and Script writer.He was an Advocate by profession who practiced at the Kerala High Court.
He was born at Kecheri of Thrissur District on May 16, 1934 to parents A.K.Ahmed and Najmakutty.His grandfather 'Ezhakulam Ahmed' was a renowned 'Mapilapattu writer' and thus the interest of Poems,music and songs was intrinsic quality in him and he started writing poems while as a school  student itself.By distinguishing his ability to write poems, at the age of ten U.P. School teacher initiated Sanskrit lessons to him and gave advice to learn further that language  to enhance his poetic skill.He later learnt Sanskrit under the Sanskrit scholar Dr.K.P.Narayana Pisharody.He loved to study that language and had the habit of reading epics like Ramayana ,Mahabharatha etc in original poetic form itself which gave him much word power, and a deep knowledge about Hindu mythology also.When became a profound Lyricist this knowledge  helped him to write  many Hindu devotional songs excellently  for films which received wide appreciation.
He used to write and publish poems in magazines  while studying at College from the year 1952 but he never ignored his studies and continued the studies brilliantly  and became an Advocate.
His first poetry book 'Sainaba' was published in the year 1965.
His entry as a Lyricist was in 1962 by writing a song for the film 'Moodupadam' directed by Ramu Kariat and thereafter he wrote songs for large number of films till his death.He wrote more than 400 songs for films.He wrote Sanskrit songs also for Malayalam films like 'Dhwani' and 'Mazha'.
He worked for nine films with the great musician M.S.Baburaj and songs like 'Suruma Ezhuthiya Mizhikale' are still very popular and sure to be immortal.
His association with G.Devarajan was for in about 45 films and many of them became hits.
Yusafali Kecheri who used classic  style and embellished words  in many of his poems but  on several occasions used simple words for many of his  film songs for everyone to enjoy.But all of his film songs has a charming exuberant quality.Such songs like 'Pavada prayathil ninne njan kandappol' , Omalale Kandu njan' , 'Pathinalam ravudichathu' etc  became super hits.
Songs in large number of  films like 'Sargam,Parinayam,Dhwani' etc possessed unmatched poetic imagination and are extremely beautiful creations.
He received Kerala State awards for songs in the  films like 'Gazal,Parinayam and Sneham'.Muslim songs for films  were written by him in fantastic manner.

He received  National award as the Best Lyricist for his Sanskrit song in the Malayalam film 'Mazha' which is "Geyam Harinamadheyam".He wrote the Sanskrit song "Janaki Jaane Rama" for the movie 'Dhwani' and it was composed by Naushad.This song earned applause and appreciation and is still very popular.
K.Raghavan,M.K.Arjunan,Ilayaraja,S.P.Venkitesh,A.T.Ummer,Jerry Amaldev,Bombay Ravi,Shyam,M.S.Viswanathan,Mohan Sithara' etc composed songs written by Yusafali Kecheri.
He wrote the story,Script,Lyrics and produced the film 'Sindooracheppu' in 1969.
He directed the films 'Maram,Vanadevatha and Neelathamara' and wrote lyrics for them also.

His famous poetry books published are 'Nadabrahman,Ayiram Navulla Mounam,Kecheripuzha,Anchu Kanyakakal,Thalolikkan,Sooryagarphan' etc.

He received Kerala Sahithya Academy Award in 1985,Odakkuzhal Award in 1987,Changampuzha Award in 1995,Krishna Veedhi Puraskaram in 1998 etc.He is also recipient of Award like Kunchacko Award,Prem Nazir Award,Kavana Kauthukam Award,Asan Prize etc.
As a Lyricist his skill  can be compared to 'Swara raga Ganga Pravaham' which was beautifully flowing uninterrupted  like the mighty River Ganga for more than four decades and presented us numerous unmemorable songs.
Yusafali left this world on March 21, 2015.

BOMBAY S.KAMAL

Bombay S.Kamal was a famous music composer and singer who also conducted several music programs.He was born in Mumbai and was well proficient in Hindustani music and Ghazals.He became an intimate friend of the great singer and Malayalam music composer M.S.Baburaj who was also fond of Hindustani music and ghazals.M.S.Baburaj invited Kamal to Kerala in late 50's and he accepted his invitation and settled at Kozikode with his family.

At Kozhikode he organised several music shows and earned name and fame as as an excellent Hindustani and ghazal singer.
Bombay S.Kamal entered Malayalam film field as a Composer with the blessings of M.S.Baburaj in 1979 by giving background music for the film 'Evide En Prabhatham'.Thereafter he composed music for several professional drama songs,music albums etc and also composed songs of 13 Malayalam films.His songs were sung by famous singers like K.J.Yesudas,K.S.Chitra,Eeswari Panicker,Kallara Gopan,P.Susheela Devi etc.
Some of the films in which he composed music for the songs are 'Nilavilakku,
Police Diary,Shaanti Nilayam,Sheershakam,Aksharartham' etc.
Bombay S.Kamal shifted to Thiruvananthapuram in 2000 and used to participate in many cultural events held here.
He died because of respiratory ailments at a Private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on March 16, 2015 at the age of 82.
He is survived by his wife and three Children.
