NOOR MOHAMMED CHARLIE

 Noor Mohammed Charlie was the first comedian of Hindi Cinema.
Noor Mohammed Memon hailed from Ranavav Village of Porbandar.His acting career started in 1925 through silent films.He acted in the talkie 'Zarina' in 1932 which earned him much appreciation and accolades.Jaal Merchant and Zubaida were the leading pair of this film.
During childhood itself he was impressed by films and instead of going to school he preferred to go to Cinema halls and thus got expelled from the school.He started the work of Umbrella repairing in Mumbai for a living.One day he visited Imperial Film Company and offered his services.Being found that he could also sing well he was selected for a salary of Rs.40/-.
Noor Mohammed was a big fan of Charlie Chaplin and imitated his mannerisms which were very much funny and was liked by the audience.His mustache was also similar to Charlie Chaplin.He largely adapted the acting style of Charlie Chaplin and therefore he was called as 'Noor Mohammed Charlie'.
Even though he imitated Charlie Chaplin's style to an extent, he had his own style of  comedy acting which influenced his contemporaries like Johnny Walker and Mehmood.
He enjoyed stardom of that period and was one of the best paid stars.
He acted in lead roles also of some films.In the film 'Chand Tara' he was the hero opposite Swaranlata.In 'Ghazal' he acted as hero opposite Leela Chitnis, and in the film 'Dulhan' Chandraprabha was his heroine.
After partition he moved to Pakistan where he continued to be a comedian actor.
He acted in an Indian film 'Akeli Mat Jaiyo' in 1963.
He died on June 30, 1983 in Karachi.

BHAGWAN DADA

Bhagwan Dada was a highly  talented person who was active in Bollywood cinema and Marathi cinema  for five decades  from the silent era  who  directed 34 films, scripted two films, produced several films,owned a  film studio in Mumbai and also acted in large number of films.
He was born as the son of a textile Mill worker in  Mumbai on August 1, 1913 as Bhagwan Abhaji Palav.He was very fond of films and wished to become a film actor from his childhood.He also had to accept the job as a labourer but also  acted in  bit roles of  silent films.Due to his good physique and acting abilities he soon got more important roles.Since he had the skill of wresting he was called as Bhagwan Dada.He was also famous as 'Master Bhagwan'.
He co-directed his first film with Pawar in 1938 titled 'Bahadur Kisan'.From 1938 to 1949 he directed  so many low budget stunt and action films which were very popular among the working class.
The Tamil film which he directed in 1941 'Vana Mohini' starring M.K.Radha and a Sri Lankan heroine 'Thavamani' was well noted and received good opinion.
He became a producer in 1942 with 'Jagriti Pictures' and he owned 'Jagriti Studios' at Chembur in Mumbai in 1947.
The social theme  film 'Albela' which he made starring Bhagwan and Geeta Bali was a huge hit.In this film Bhagwan depicted a simpleton and the dance numbers he created for this film was also very popular and liked by the audience.He could not repeat his success later on and had to cease film production and direction.
In 1942 as part of a scene he had to slap on the face of the  actress Lalita Pawar and Bhagwan slapped very hard which resulted in a burst left eye vein.She had to take treatment for three years.
Bhagwan after selling out his studio,Bungalow,and fleet of cars  acted in many films in comedy roles, dance scenes,Cameo roles etc later on  but was noted only in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, and Chori Chori.
He was in a state of poverty when he died at his residence in Dadar, Mumbai  on February 4, 2002 at the age of 89.

ISHWARLAL

Ishwarlal was a popular actor and director of Bollywood films for four decades from 1930's.
He was born on October 9, 1911 at Waghania in Gujarat as Hariprasad Joshi.
He entered films as an actor from early 30's and acted in films like 'Premi Jogan,Char Chakram,Bhola Shikar,Veer Bahruwahan' etc.
In 1934 'Nadira' directed by Jayant Desai was a noted film and in 1935 'Keemti Aansoo' also got accolades In this film Gohar and Billimoria were the main pair and Ishwarlal acted in supporting role.
In 35 'College Kanya' was a hit film in which Raja Sandow and Madhuri acted as the lead pair and Ishwarlal acted in supporting role.It was also directed by Jayant Desai.
He was the hero of 1936 film Dil Ka Daku and 1937 film 'Dil Farosh' which were directed by D.N.Madhok.
Motilal,Ishwarlal and Khurshid were the main actors of 'Holi(40) for which Ishwarlal received critical acclaim.
He received accolades for the movie 'Umeed'(41) directed by Manibhai Vyas.
He was the male lead of 'Lalkar' directed by Jayant Desai in 44.
In the film 'Badi Maa'(45) Sitara Devi and Ishwarlal acted as the leading pair.
This film was directed by Master Vinayak.
In the Hindu Mythology film 'Subhadra(46) Ishwarlal acted in hero role as 'Arjun' who married Subhadra.Shanta Apte acted in the title role as Subhadra and Prem Adib acted as Krishna.
In 1963 he acted in the hit film 'Meri Surat Teri Ankhen' directed by R.K.Rakhan.Ashok Kumar,Pradeep Kumar,Tarun Bose,Asha Parekh,Achala Sacdev  etc acted in it.It was based on the Bengali novel 'Ulka'.Ishwarlal depicted a wealthy character 'Raj Kumar' who rejects his newly born baby since it was dark complexioned and the story progresses.
Ishwarlal directed more than twelve films and acted in many of them in protagonist roles.
'Mahasati Tulsi Vrinda,Sati Narmada,Jai Shankar,Matrubhumi, Heera,Gopi Chand' etc are some of the films he directed.The last film which he directed was 'Jawan Mard' in 1966.He died on January 22, 1969 in Mumbai.

TUN TUN

Tun Tun was a prolific singer and Comedienne of Bollywood and she was probably the first comedienne of Hindi Cinema.She was born as Uma Devi Khatri on 11 July 1923 in Uttar Pradesh.Her parents died when she was very young and she  was raised by her uncle.
At the age of 13 she left home and reached Bombay where she met film music composer Naushad Ali.He was impressed about her musical knowledge and singing abilities and gave her chance to sing in films.Her debut as a solo playback singer was for film 'Wamiq Azra' in 1946.Soon she became an established playback singer and sang several songs in films like 'Dard,Anokhi Ada,Aahuti,Jungle Ka Jawahar,Naya Zamana,Jungle King,Khufia Mahal,Babul,Dholak,Deedar,Amber,Gul Bahar,Aar Paar' and many more.

But when new singers like Lata Mangeshkar,Asha Bhonsle etc arrived, she found it difficult to compete with them with her limited voice range  and decided to take up acting as the profession.She possessed a witty nature,much humour sense and timing  as well as a fatty body which she utilized smartly to make people laugh.
It was Dilip Kumar who recommended her in his film 'Babul' in 1950 for a comedy role.Nargis was the heroine of this film which was directed by S.U.Sunny.It was Dilip Kumar who renamed Uma Devi Khatri  as 'Tun Tun'.






In a career which extended for more than five decades she presented numerous characters and funny situations which the audience could not forget.
She created humorous scenes pairing with actors like Bhagwan Dada,Agha,Sunder,Johnny Walker,Mukri,Keshto etc.
She acted in films of Guru Dutt like 'Aar Paar'Mr.&Mrs.55, Pyasa,Kagaz ke Phool' etc.
She acted in super hit film Ujala(59) starring Shammi Kapoor and Mala Sinha.
Mala Sinha and Sanjay Khan paired Dillagi(60),Feroz Khan-Mumtaz film 'Aag(67),Dev Anand-Vyjanthimala's  'Duniya'(68),Ashok Kumar-Vimi's film 'Aabroo(68),Meena Kumari-Sanjay Khan's 'Abhilasha(68),Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh paired 'Heera(73),Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri paired 'Naya Din Nai Raat(74),Dev Anand and Hema Malini paired 'Amir Garib(74),Randhir Kapoor-Tanuja's 'Hamrahi(74),Jeetendra and Maushumi Chatterjee paired 'Dil aur Deewar(78),Feroz Khan and Zeenat Aman paired 'Qurbani,Mithun Chakraborty and Kim paired 'Disco Dancer,Amitabh Bachchan and Smita Patel paired 'Namak Halal(82) are all exceptionally good films in which Tun Tun acted.
Tun Tun died on 24 November 2003, at the age of 80 in Mumbai.

DULARI

Dulari was a character actress of Bollywood cinema for about six decades and acted in more than 150 films.Her performance in  films like Teesri Kasam,Deewar,Padosan,Jab Pyar Kisi se Hota Hai,Mujhe jeeno Do etc were well noted.
Dulari was born in 1927 and entered films as a child artist. She  acted as child artiste   in the  film 'Noore Iman'(1933) in which  Raja Sandow P.K was the hero.




She acted as child artist  in films Kala Nag,Devaki,Samaj Ki Bhool etc.In the film Samaj Ki Bhool(1934) Ghaznavi acted as male lead..The film was directed by Homi Master.
She acted in films like 'Jhankar,Krishna Sudama' etc also during the 30's.
'Hamari Baat' (1943) produced by Bombay Talkies was a well noted film of Devika Rani and Suraiya in which Dulari also played an important role.Raj Kapoor acted in this film.This film is considered as her debut film as a mature actress.
In the 1961 film 'Jab Pyar Kisi se Hota Hai'(Dev Anand-Asha Parekh) directed by Nasir Hussain, she acted as sister of Roop Singh.(Mubarak).




In 1963 in the film 'Mujhe Jeeno Do' starring Sunil Dutt and Waheeda Rehman she portrayed an important character role.
In the super hit film 'Anupama'(66) Dulari depicted the character 'Sarla' and in the Super hit film 'Aradhana' of Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore pair  she played the role as a doctor.
In another super hit film 'Padosan'(68) in which Sunil Dutt and Saira Banu paired she acted as wife of Om Prakash as Mrs.Pratap Singh which is still remembered by the audience.
In the film 'Deewar' which told the story of two brothers, Vijay and Ravi Verma,(Vijay a smuggler and Ravi a Police Officer) Dulari had an important role.Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor acted as the brothers.
In the film 'Teesri Kasam' she acted as Hiraman's (Raj Kapoor) Bhabhi.This film was directed by Basu Bhattacharya.
She had an important role in Dev Anand-Hema Malini film 'Johnny Mera Naam'.
Her last appearance was in the film 'Ziddi'(95) directed by Guddu Dhanoa.
Dulari died in January 2013 at Pune.

KARAN DEWAN

Karan Dewan was a popular Bollywood actor who acted mainly as hero during 
40's and 50's. He shifted to  character roles in 60's and 70's.He was the hero of the famous Blockbuster film 'Rattan' which was released in 1944.
Karam Dewan was born as 'Dewan Karan Chopra' on 6 November 1917 at Gujranwala,Punjab(Now in Pakistan).His ambition was to become a film actor and it was materialized in 1942 by the film 'Tamanna'.
The film 'Rattan' boosted his popularity in which Swaran Lata was the heroine and Amir Banu also acted. M.Sadiq was the director of this film which was the highest grossing film of that year.The songs composed by Naushad also became much popular.
 





'Duniya' was a noted film of 49 in which Suraiya acted opposite him and Shakeela also acted in it.
'Bahar' was a well noted film of 1951 in which Vyjayanthimala and Padmini acted along with Karan Dewan.Pran,Om Prakash, and Leela Mishra were in the cast and this super hit film was directed by M.V.Raman.
Karan Dewan and Meena Shorey were the leading pair of 'Aag Ka Dariya' which was directed by Roop K.Shorey.Prithviraj Kapoor also acted in it.
Karan Dewan acted as the male lead of 'Teen Batti Char Raaste'(53) directed by Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram.Sandhya Shantaram was the heroine of this critically acclaimed film.
M.Sadiq directed 'Musafir Khana' in 55 and 'Chhoo Mantar' in 1956 in which Karan Dewan and Shyama were the leading pair.Jayant,Gope,Johnny Walker etc acted along with them in Musafir Khana and In the film 'Chhoo Mantar' Johnny Walker and Anita Guha acted with Karan Dewan and Shyama.
'In 1960 in the super hit film 'Apna Ghar' Prem Nath and Shyama were the leading pair and Karan Dewan acted in character role.
'Nadaan' was a well noted hit film of 1971 in which Asha Parekh,Navin Nischal acted as main pair.Devan Verma was the director and Karam Dewan acted in  character role.
He acted in an important role in the film 'Himalay Se Ooncha' of  1975 in which Sunil Dutt was the hero.
Karan Dewan's brother Jaimini Dewan was a film Producer.
Karan Dewan's wife was actress Manju.He died on August 2, 1979 in Bomabay.
