SUCHITRA SEN

The most famous Bengali Film actress ever was Suchitra Sen who passed away  last month on January 17, 2014.
In a career span which extended for 25 years she acted in more than 60 films out of which 30 were opposite Uttam Kumar and many of them were super hits.
Suchita Sen was born on 6 April 1931 at Siranjgonj District of present day Bangladesh and  her family moved to West Bengal at the time of Partition.
She got married to a wealthy Industrialist 'Dibaneth Sen' in 1947 and lived with him till his death in 1970.Their daughter Moon Moon Sen is also a well known film  actress.
Suchitra Sen started her film career in 1952 and her first film was not released.Her first released film 'Sharey Chuattor' opposite Uttam Kumar  became a box office hit and the producers and directors soon found out that this  pair was  favourites of the audience.They acted as main pair of more than 30 films.
Suchitra Sen acted occasionally in a few Hindi films also out of which 'Devdas' and 'Aandhi' became critically acclaimed  super hits.
In 1955 she received Best Actress Award for her  first Hindi movie 'Devdas' in which she played the character 'Parvati'.The film was directed by Bimal Roy in which Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala were the other main actors.
Her Bengali Films ' Agnipareeksha,Indrani,Kamal Lata, Shaare Chuattor,Sadanander Mela, Ekti Raat, Shaapmochan' etc were all critically acclaimed super hit films.
She received Best Actress Award at the 1963 Moscow Int'l Film Festival and became the first Indian actress to receive an International award.
In 1957 she acted in the Hindi movie 'Musafir' opposite Dilip Kumar.The film was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.Dilip Kumar depicted the character 'Raja' and Suchitra Sen played the character 'Shakuntala Verma.
Bharat Bhushan and Suchitra Sen were the lead actors of 1957 Hindi film 'Champakali'.Pran,Shubha Kote,Mubarak,Mumtaz Begum etc were the other actors. and the film was directed by Nandlal Jawantlal.








In the 1960 released 'Sarhad' Dev Anand was her hero.
In another Hindi film released in 1960 ' Bombai Ka Babu' directed by Raj Khosla, Suchitra Sen and Dev Anand were the leading pair.
Ashok Kumar,Dharmendra and Suchitra Sen acted in pivot roles of 1966 released film 'Mamta' which was directed by Asit Sen.In this film Suchitra Sen acted as mother Devyani, daughter Suparna and a character Pannabai.
In 1975 she acted in the controversial yet memorable film 'Aandhi' opposite Sanjeev Kumar.The film was directed by Gulzar.
She retired from films in 1978 after an acting career of 25 years.
She received 'Padma Shri' award in 1972 for notable contribution in Arts.
She was given 'Bengali Bubhushan' Award for lifetime achievement in 2012.

USHA KIRAN

Usha Kiran was yesteryear popular actress who appeared as heroine and in supporting roles of many Hindi and Marathi films and acted opposite famous stars like 'Ashok Kumar,Dev Anand,Raj Kapoor,Dilip Kumar,Rajendra Kumar etc'.Her acting career extended for more than four decades.
Usha Kiran was born on 22 April 1929 and started her acting career as a stage artist.Her entry to film industry was by acting in a small role for the 1948 film 'Kalpana'.
She got an important role in the 1952 film 'Daag' in which Dilip Kumar and Nimmi acted in lead roles.The story was about a poor person who makes toys from mud.It was directed by Amia Chakravarty.
In the same director's film 'Patita' in 1953 Usha Kiran acted as heroine





opposite Dev Anand.
In 1954 in the film 'Baadbaan' directed by Phani Majumdar, Usha Kiran acted in supporting role and Dev Anand-Meena Kumari were the lead pair.Usha Kiran got Filmfare Best Supporting actress award for her excellent performance in this film.Ashok Kumar also acted in this film.
In the 1961 film 'Nazrana' in which Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala acted in main roles, Usha Kiran,Asha Sachdev and Agha also acted in important roles.
It was the remake of famous Tamil romantic film 'Kalyana Parisu'(1959) which was a very successful film in which Gemini Ganesan and B.S.Saroja Devi acted in main roles.The same producer/director C.V.Sridhar produced and directed 'Nazrana' in 1961.
In the same year Usha Kiran acted as heroine of a successful film 'Kabuliwala' in which Balraj Sahni was the hero.The film was based on a story written by 'Rabindranath Tagore'.

In 1975 Usha Kiran acted as the mother of Jayabhaduri's heroine character in the film 'Mili'.Ashok Kumar acted as her husband.The film was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
Usha Kiran died on  9 March 2000.

JAYSHREE GADKAR

Jayshree Gadkar was yesteryear superstar of Marathi films who appeared in several Hindi films also.
She was born in a Konkani speaking family in Northern Karnataka, near Karwar on 21 February 1942.
She began her film career as a child dancer in the V.Shantaram film 'Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje' in 1955 in which Sandhya portrayed the main female lead role.
Later she appeared opposite Raja Gosavi in the film 'Disat Tasa Nasat'and then she  got lead role of comedy theme film 'Sangtye Aika'.Eventually she  got established in the film field as a popular lead actress and  was  accomplished  as a talented actress who possessed excellent dancing skill combined with beautiful features.She handled any type of roles like social,love stories,mythological, historical etc.
Jayshree had the ability to handle mythological characters in a charismatic manner and  so appeared in many Hindi mythological films in lead roles.
'Balram Shrikrishna' was a mythological film which was directed by Chandrakant in 1968.Dara Singh,Savitri,Jayshree Gadkar,Pritviraj,Shahu Modak etc acted in it.
In the film 'Balak Dhruv'  Abhi Bhattacharya and Jayshree Gadkar acted in main roles.
In the film 'Savitri' Jayshree Gadkar,Upendra Trivedi,Meena T,Ratna Mala etc acted.
In the film 'Tulsi Vivah' Dara Singh and Jayshree were in lead roles.
'Aliya Bhagsi,Ghat Padli Thaka Thaka,Avgachi Sansar,Mohityanchi Manjula,Manini etc are some of her successful and famous Marathi films.
She acted in more than 250 Marathi films in lead roles  in her career.
She won National award for her Marathi  films  'Manini,Vaijantha,Sawal Mazha Aika,Saadhi Mansa'.
Her husband renowned stage actor 'Bal Dhuri' portrayed the role of 'King Dasaradha' in the  T.V. serial 'Ramayana' which was produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar in the 80's.Dasaradha's wife 'Kousalya' who was the mother of 'Shree Rama' was played by Jayshree Gadkar which received much accolades and fame.







She directed two films 'Saasar Mahar' and 'Ashi Asavi Saasu'.
She published her autobiography in 1986 titled 'Ashi Mi Jayshree'.
She died on 29 Aug 2008 at the age of 66.

JEEVAN

Jeevan was a very popular actor of Bollywood who acted in large number of films for a long span of five decades.In many Hindu mythological films he portrayed the character of 'Narad Muni' which suited him very well and got wide acclaim from the audience.During 70's and 80's he earned appreciation for for the villain roles which he handled efficiently in many films.
Jeevan was born on October 24, 1915 at Srinagar as 'Omkar Nath Dhar'.
He entered films in 1935 by acting as the character 'Madhav' in  'Fashionable India' and in 1936 in 'Romantic India'.
He was noted for his roles in Station Master in 1942.He got accolades for his films like 'School Master,Vanamala,Zameen Aasman,Aaj Ki Duniya' etc during this period.
In the 50's he acted in social theme films like'Izzat,Shole,Sangam,Majboori' etc and in mythological films like 'Dasavataar,Shiv Shakti,Jai Mahadev,Ekadasi' etc.In the 60's he acted in mythological films like 'Shiv Parvati,Kailaspati,Sati Savitri' etc.
Social theme films like 'Bidesiya,Bachpan,Zindagi'Phool aur Pathar' etc also earned good response for his roles during that period.
In the Meena Kumari-Dharmendra film 'Phool aur Pathar' directed by O.P.Ralhan in 1966, he portrayed the character 'Jeevan Ram' as the father-in- law of the heroine character of Meena Kumari who acted as a widow-Shanti Devi'.jeevan received good opinion for this role.
Jeevan was a regular presence in almost all Dev Anand films during 1946-78 and in many of the films of Man Mohan Desai.His villain roles of 'Amar Akbar Antony and Dharam Veer received applauses.
In 1971 in the mythological film 'Kangan; he played 'Hanumanji'.
During 70's he received accolades for films like Man Mohan Desai's 'Roti'(74),Amar Akbar Antony(77),Dev Anand's Heera Panna(73),Ishq,Ishq,Ishq(74),Feroz Khan's Dharmatma(75)' etc.
During 80's he was part of super hit films like 'Naseeb,Professor Pyarelal,Hathkadi,Desh Premee, Sanam Teri Kasam' etc.
Jeevan could also act in some Punjabi films like 'Teri Meri Ek Jindri'.
Jeevan died  on June 10, 1987 at the age of 72.

TRILOK KAPOOR

Trilok Kapoor was a very popular actor of Bollywood who acted in large number of mythological films.During the period 1940's and 50's there released maximum number of mythological,historical and fictional films and Trilok Kapoor could act in the protagonist roles of many of those mythological films.
                                 Trilok Kapoor was none other than the brother of 'Pritviraj Kapoor'.He was born in Peshwar and completed his studies in his native place.He went to Calcutta and tried to get roles in films but returned to Mumbai  to join his brother Pritviraj Kapoor.
At Mumbai he got his debut movie 'Char Darvash' in 1933 This

 film was also known as 'Merchant of Arabia' and considered as a classic movie..Afterwards he worked for a small period as an assistant to Director Hem Chandra.
The audience liked his role as Lord Shiva in Vijay Bhatt's movie Ramayana.Nirupa Roy acted as 'Parvati' in this film.Later in several mythological films like 'Shiv Shakti, Shiv Kanya, Jai Mahadev, Ganesh Janma, Ganesh Mahima, Har Har Mahadev,Shiv Ratri,Shiv Parvati' etc he portrayed the role of Lord Shiva and Nirupa Roy played Parvati's role.The people were so much impressed by their Shiv-Parvati image that calendars and posters of Trilok Kapoor as Lord Shiva and Nirupa Roy as Devi Parvati were in great demand.
He acted in lead role of 'Mirza Sahiban' in 1947 in which Noor jehan was the heroine.It was directed by K.Amarnath.
He was active till 1989  and 
Trilok Kapoor's last appearance was for a T.V. movie 'Akanksha'.

MANHAR DESAI

Manhar Desai acted in protagonist roles of large  number of films from the 40's to 80's mainly in mythological,historical and fictional types.
Manhar Desai was born on August 3, 1917 in Mumbai as Malkum Desai.
His films 'Chandramukhi',  'Madhosh' , 'Mahabharat', 'Sati Annapurna' etc earned him much popularity and accolades.
In the film 'Mangalfera' of 1949 Manhar Desai and Dulari acted in lead roles and earned good response from the critics and audience.
Meena Kumari and Manhar Desai were the lead pair of 1951 film 'Madhosh'  which was directed by J.B.H.Wadia amd  earned accolades.





He acted opposite Nirupa Roy in the hit film 'Nag Panchami' which was
released in 1953.It was directed by Raman B.Desai.
His character as 'Raghu' in the 1955 film 'Sati Annapurna' was nice.
In the 1960 film 'Mahabharat' which was a successful film at the box office, he acted as the popular character 'Karna' which drew much attention and good opinion.
The lead role which he handled for the film 'Chandramukhi'(60) earned him appreciation and accolades.It was directed by R.Thakur.
The role as 'Balram' which he portrayed for 1977 film 'Jai Dwarakadheesh' was also well noted.
In the 1979 film 'Gopal Krishna' he played the role as 'Maharaj Kans'.In the film 'Mahabali Hanuman' he portrayed 'Ravan'.
In the 1980 film 'Geet Gaata Chal' he played the character 'Durga Babu'.

In the 1984 released film 'Maya Bazar' he played 'Bal Ram's' role.
He acted opposite all leading heroines of those period including Meena Kumari,Nirupa Roy,Nigar Sultana,Dulari, Usha Kiran,Anjali etc.
Manhar Desai died on February 25, 1992 in Mumbai.

SHANTA APTE

Shanta Apte was a superstar of yesteryear Bollywood arena who was also a good singer who sang the songs of her characters which she enacted in films.
She was appreciated for the boldness to portray some typical characters which helped to eradicate social injustice which prevailed in the society at that period.
We should admit that films have helped a lot to change the ignorance of a large mass of people  and the injustice prevailed  in several fields which were followed as a tradition for the benefits of certain sectors of the society or rich people.V.Shantaram was a film maker who spoke against such social malpractices through his films and in those times to portray such characters even the artists who had guts only accepted such offers.
Shanta Apte got accolades for the character 'Nirmala' which she played in the film 'Duniya Na Mane' which was directed by V.Shantaram.Her character Nirmala was an orphanage girl who was compelled to marry an old rich widower and her revolts and protests against this marriage  was the theme of the film.
Keshavrao Date acted as the hero of this film as the rich old widower.
She had already hits films like 'Amrit Manthan' and 'Amarjyothi' when Duniya Na Mane was released and she became a superstar.
In the film 'Amar Jyothi' which was also directed by V.Shantaram Durga Khote acted as Queen Soudamini and Shanta Apte acted as princess Nandini.
In the film 'Wahan' she was the heroine in which Leela Chitnis had an important role.

Keshavrao Date and Shanta Apte were the main pair of the film 'Kunku'.
Shanta Apte and Jeevan were the lead pair of 'Apna Ghar' which was released in 1942.Jeevan was her hero in the film 'Kadambari' directed by Nand Lal.
Prem Adib acted opposite her in the lead role of film 'Subhadra'(46) which was directed by Master Vinayak.
'Mohabbat' directed by Phani Majumdar was another film for which she received  appreciation.She got good opinion for 'Zamindar' and 'Duhai' also.
Shanta Apte appeared in several Marathi films also other than Hindi films.
She died on February 24, 1964 in Mumbai.

CHANDRAMOHAN

Chandramohan was a popular actor of Bollywood during 30's and 40's and portrayed some unforgettable characters in several films.
He was born in 1905 at Narasinghpur in Madhyapradesh and rose to
fame in 1934 by acting the character of a  'High Priest' in V.Shantaram's film 'Amrit Manthan'.Chandramohan's large grey eyes;  his unique speciality were highlighted  in the opening sequence of this film.
Chandramohan was a talented actor who possessed skill in horse riding and sword fighting and his performance as Emperor Jahangir in 'Pukar' which was directed by Sohrab Modi was superb.He earned accolades for the portrayal of character 'Randhir Singh' in Mehboob Khan's 'Humayun'.
In 1947 he played the character as 'King Dushyanta' in V.Shantaram's 'Shakuntala'.Jayashree acted opposite to him in the title role  as 'Shakuntala'.
He had the expertise of voice modulation, and his  masculine robust voice combined with rigid stubborn features were reasons to sought him to play historical characters of eminence.He was selected by K.Asif  for the role of Shahanshah Akbar in 'Mughal-e-Azam and the film was half completed when Chandramohan unexpectedly expired in 1949 at the age of 44.
His last performance was in the film 'Shaheed' in 1948 in which he portrayed the character 'Rai Bahadur Dwaraka Nath' as the father of character 'Ram' which was played by Dilip Kumar.

SHAHU MODAK

Shahu Modak was a popular Bollywood actor who acted in numerous  Hindi and Marathi films from 1932 to 1986.He worked mainly in mythological films and was famous as the character 'Lord Krishna' which he played in more than 30 films.





Shahu Modak was born  in Ahmednagar in 1918.
He was admired for the Lord  Krishna and Lord Vishnu characters he played and for the title role of 'Sant Gyaneswar' for which he received accolades.
He acted in social theme films like 'Manoos.Awara Shahzeda,Dulhan,Talaash' etc  and historical films like 'Razia Sultan' also.
He sang two songs in the film 'Bharat Milap'.
One of the earliest double roles was played by him in Master Vithal's film 'Awara Shahzeda' in 1933 as the  Prince and a  Pauper.Jayashree Gadkar was the heroine of this film.
In the social film 'Bulbul-e-Punjab he acted the lead role opposite Shanta Kumari.
In the film 'Manoos'(1939) he portrayed the lead role as a  Policeman 'Ganpat' who saved a prostitute 'Maina' from police raid and falls in love with her.The film was directed by V.Shantaram.
His spouse Pratibha Modak wrote and published  his biography.Shahu Modak died in 1993.
