DEV ANAND

Dev Anand, the perspicuous Superstar and  one of the trios and legend (the other two being Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar)  that ruled Bollywood arena from the 50's;  even though vanished from the scenario, the luminous memories and impressions will not fade away from the hearts of the film viewers.
Dev Anand was an Actor,Producer,Director,Script  writer etc and he scrutinized every aspects of film making for assuring perfection.He gave much importance for songs and its location and manifestation were also done with care.He always thought positively, had dreams and ambitions and the confidence to materialize his aspirations.He was very hard working, had much enthusiasm and never stopped working.
The flamboyant star who was on the top like Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar was very much liked by the audience and his films always received warm reception.
He was born in Gurudaspur, Punjab  as Devdutt Pishorimal Anand.His father was a lawyer.Dev Anand studied at Lahore College and completed B.A.(Honors) in English Literature and left for Mumbai to join his brother Chetan Anand for a film career.
He started at Prabhat Studios and acted in the film 'Hum Ek Hain' and in 'Ziddi' for Bombay Talkies.
Dev Anand and his brother started a production company 'Navketan Films' in 1949 and Dev Anand's first hit film 'Baazi' was produced by them and was directed by Guru Dutt.Dev Anand and Guru Dutt were in good terms and were close friends.
Dev Anand acted in 114 Hindi films and in 104 films he was solo lead hero.He acted in two English films also.His rapid style of dialogue delivery and unique acting style and mannerisms were very much appreciated by the audience.
His negative characters were also well accepted by the audience like gang member of 'Dushman' , black marketer in 'Kala Bazaar' etc  and tragic genre themes like 'Pocket Maar', 'Kala Pani' , Bombai Ka baboo'  and 'Sharabi' were well accepted  and hits.
He introduced several heroines to Bollywood and also acted with almost all top heroines of that period like 'Suraiya,Kalpana Kartik,Simi Garewal,Vaijayantimala,Hema Malini,Waheeda Rehman,Nanda,Shyama,Tanuja,Anju Mahendru,Faryal,Rakhee,Zeenat Aman,Mumtaz,Teena  Munim,Parveen Babi,Yogeeta Bali' etc etc.
'Baazi' was directed by Guru Dutt in 1951 and 'Jaal' in 52.
'Taxi Driver' was a nice film directed by Chetan Anand in 1954.Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik were the lead pair and during the shooting of this film that both of them fell in love and Dev Anand  married her later.
We will love the unique Taxi  driver 'Mangal' of  this film who is known as 'hero' among his friends.
'Munimji and House No.44' were noted films during 50's.Munimji was directed by Subodh Mukherjee in which Nalini Jaywant was his heroine, and in the film  House No.44 Kalpana paired with him.
'Pocket Maar,Bombai Ka baboo, Rahi,Tere Mere Sapne,Paying Guest,Dushman,Kalapani,Pocket Maar,Sharabi' were all hits and films well acclaimed by the audience.
'Bombai Ka Baboo' unfolds a subtle incestuous relationship and was directed by Raj Khosla.Dev Anand pretended as a rich man and loved a wealthy girl(Suchitrasen) in this film.
In the film 'Tere Mere Sapne' Mumtaz proved to be a skilled  and talented actress other than a gorgeous lovely girl.
In the film Paying guest(57) Nutan acted opposite to him and was directed by Subodh Mukherjee.
'Kalapani; was 1958 film in which Dev Anand investigates how his father was accused and in jail  and in the course meets Madhubala and Nalini Jaywant.
'Jewel Thief' was a good film in which he played his own character's double.
A Police Commissioner's son comes under suspicion as a Jewel thief was the theme of this film.It was directed by Vijay Anand and Vyjantimala,Tanuja,Helen,Faryal,Ashok Kumar,D.k.Sapru etc acted in it.
'Prem Pujari' was Dev Anand's directorial venture in which Waheeda Rehman was the heroine.Madan Puri,Shatrughan Sinha,Prem Chopra,Sajjan etc acted.
"Johny Mera Naam' was directed by Chetan Anand in which Hema Malini was the heroine.It was this film that assured stardom for Hema Malini.
In the film that told the culture of Hippies 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' which was directed by Dev Anand himself, the main theme was separation of siblings in childhood.Zeenat Aman,Mumtaz,PremChopra, Rajendra Nath etc acted.
In the film 'Guide'(65) which was directed by Vijay Anand, and  one of his nicest movie,Waheeda Rehman acted opposite to him.Raju, Dev Anand's character  guides Rosy's career into stardom but Raju fell into a  pit of corruption and damnation.
His remarkable films of 50's 60's and 70's and the goodwill he earned through them  helped him a lot later on.This does not mean that his later films were not up to the mark.Dev Anand always thought for the audience and presented good films in all aspects always.Film was the lifeblood of that great actor who summoned his life for movies and  was planning for another film in his last stage also.
He passed away on December 3, 2011 at the age of 88 in London.
He was the recipient of Padma Bhushan from the Government of India in 2001 and 'Dada Saheb Phalke Award' for his contributions to Indian Cinema in 2002.
He was the recipient of several  National and











 















 International Awards.
