MUKESH

The legendary playback singer Mukesh was very active during 1940's to 70's and in the 40's he had acted in several films also.
Mukesh Chandra Mathur was born on 22 July 1923 in Delhi.His father Zorawar Chand Mathur was an Engineer.
As a child he was very much interested in music and listened keenly to the music lessons which was being taught to his sister by her Guru at home.
After his studies he went to Bombay and stayed with Motilal who was his



relative and popular film actor.
While staying with Motilal he learned music from Pandit Jagannath Prasad.
By the help of Motilal he got chance to act in a movie 'Nirdosh' in 1941 and sang songs in it.
His songs for the film 'Pehli Nazar'(1945) were well noted and he received wide acclaim as a playback singer.Meanwhile he was engaged as an actor also and acted in films like 'Aadeb Arz(1943), Aah(1953),Mashooka(53),Anurag(56) and many more opposite popular heroines like Suraiya  of that period.
As a  new singer initially he imitated K.L.Saigal, but later managed to sing in his own style.
His voice was much suited to Superstar Raj Kapoor and when Mukesh died unexpectedly the sad and shocked Raj Kapoor said "I have lost my Voice".
Mukesh sung numerous songs in his career out of which several are super hits and still appease music lovers.

With Geeta Dutt he created large number of duet  hit songs as well as with Lata Mangeshkar also.
He received Filmfare awards for his songs in films 'Anari,Pehchan,Be-Imaan and Kabhi Kabhie'.
He won National Film Award for Best Male Playback singer in the year 1973.
He died on a sudden heart attack on 27 Aug 1976 while he was on a music programme abroad.
The mellifluous voice of Mukesh will remain spellbound to the listener's hearts for ever.

LALITA PAWAR

Lalita Pawar was a very popular actress of Bollywood who was there in the field from silent era and continued her career for seven decades.
She was born as 'Amba' on 18 April 1916 in Nashik, Maharashtra.Her father Laxman Rao Shagun was a wealthy cloth merchant.She started acting career at the age of nine by acting in the 1928 silent film 'Raja Harishchandra'.After acting as child artist for a few years she became lead female artist of many films.
She gave hits like 'Netaji Palkar', a major Maratha historical focussing on Shivaji.It was directed by Bhalji Pendharkar.New Hana pictures 'Sant Damaji',Navyug Chitrapal's 'Amrit' written by V.S.Khandekar,Chhaya Films Gora Kumbher etc were all hits in which Lalita was in  the female lead.
In 1932 she co-produced silent film 'Kailash' and acted in it as the heroine.
In the year 1938 she produced a talkie 'Duniya Kya Hai' which was directed by G.P.Pawar.Lalita Pawar acted as a mistreated orphan 'Lalita'  who was cheated by a person by name 'Madhav' in this film.
In the film 'Rajkumari' of 1938 Lalita and Jeevan were the main pair.It was directed by Dwarka Khosla.






In the 1935 film 'Katil Katar' which was directed by G.P.Pawar she acted as the female lead actress.
In the 1936 film 'Baghi Sipahi' directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar she acted opposite Mohd.Isaq.
In the 1937 film 'Toofani' directed by G.P.Pawar and 1942 film 'Mamaji' directed by Narottam Vyas Lalita acted as the heroine.
In the 1942 film 'Nari' directed by Raja Yagnik,  Tarlok Kapoor was the hero and Lalita Pawar was the heroine.
In 1942,  on the sets of film 'Jung -e- Azadi' actor Master  Bhagwan had to slap on her face as part of a scene and he slapped very hard which resulted in an eye vain burst.She had a defective left eye after prolonged treatment.Because of this accident,  later she accepted character roles only.
She was  well noted in paternal roles like mother,mother-in-law, sister,aunt etc.Her memorable  films incude 'Anari, Shri 420,,Mr&Mrs.55',Parvarish(58) Professor(62),Kohraa(64) etc.In Ramanand Sagar's   T.V. serial 'Ramayan' she excelled in the role of 'Mandhara'.
She received Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Anari(1959).
She was honoured as the first lady of Indian cinema by the  Government of India in 1961.
She died on 24 Feb. 1998.

HARI SHIVDASANI

Hari Shivdasani was a reputed character actor of Bollywood for a long span of fifty years.He was born in 1909 and settled in Mumbai after Indian partition.
He started acting career in 1935 with the film 'Dharma Ki Devi' followed by another film 'Bharat Ki Beti'.In 1936 films like Sher ke Panja and Prem Ratri established his position.
Later he got accolades for several films like 'Shree 420,Anuradha,Satyam Shivam Sundaram,Chhotti Bahen,Waqt' and many more.He acted in more than 70 films in his career.
Actress Babita is his daughter and actress Sadhana Shivdasani is his brother's daughter.
Hari Sivdasani died in 1994.

NALINI JAYWANT

Nalini Jaywant was an exceptionally talented actress who had extraordinary ability to express emotions as per the required sequences.As per the acting skill is concerned she could be compared to Suriya,Meenakumari,Geetabali,Madhubala,Nargis' etc.
She was born in 1926 and came in to limelight with the lead role of film 'Radhika' in 1941.Before that she had two three small roles in films.Her father Dadasaheb Jaywant  and brothers were not willing to allow her take up acting profession initially  but later gave her consent.
Actress Shobhana Samarth who was the mother of Nutan and Tanuja was her first cousin and already in acting field at that period.
Her films like Anokha Pyar,Samadhi,Sangram,Mr.X,Kafila,Mehbooba,Muquaddar,Munimji' were all considered as classic films for which she received wide acclaim.
She acted opposite top heroes of that period in several films.With Ashok Kumar she paired in many  films like 'Samadhi,Sangram,Jalpari,Kafila,Nau Baher,Saloni,Lakeeran,Naaz,Mr.X,Sheroo,Toofan Mein Pyar Kahan' etc.

In the same year Mukesh and Nalini were the main actors of 'Nirdosh' directed by V.C.Desai.
In another film of 1941 Sheikh Mukhtar acted opposite to her in the film 'Bahen'.
Dilip Kumar,Nargis and Nalini Jaywant were in pivot roles of 1948 film 'Anokha Pyar' directed by Dharamsey.
Sekhar,Bharat Bhushan and Nalini acted in 'Ankhen' of 1950.
Karan Dewan acted opposite to her in the 1951 film 'Ek Nazer'.
Sekhar was the hero of 1952 film 'Do Raha' directed by Bal Chabra in which Nalini Jaywant was the female lead.
In the 1953 film 'Shikast' directed by Ramesh Saigal, Dilip Kumar was the hero.
Dev Anand acted opposite her in the 1953 film 'Rahi' and in the 1955 film 'Munimji'.
She won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in the 1958 film 'Kala Pani'.
She died at the age of 84 in 2010.She had no children.

P.JAIRAJ

One of the renowned action heroes of Bollywood who  started very early from 1929 in silent films and continued successfully in talkies was P.Jairaj whose original name was Paidipathi Jairula Naidu.He



was born on Sept. 28, 1909 at  Karimnagar,Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.
At the age of nineteen he left home and went to Bombay to join Navy but his ambition was not materialized.He lived in Bombay doing odd jobs but tried to get roles in films with the help of friends from Hyderabad who were working in Studios.Because he had a good physique and personality he got roles in silent movies of that period.Very soon he became a sensation and received roles in several films  and many of his films were hits. During 1929-31 he could act in 11 silent films.The success continued with the advent of sound films also.'Shikari' was his first talkie which was an action packed jungle film.He had at that period successful films like 'Rifle Girl,Hamari Izzat,Bhabhi,Panna' etc  which were all hits.
During talkie period he was one among the top heroes like 'Pritviraj Kapoor,Shantaram,Motilal' etc.He acted with top heroines like 'Shobhana Samarth,Sashikala,Shakeela,Madhuri,Devika Rani,Khursheed,Nirupa Roy' etc.
He could act in a few Marathi and Gujarati films also.Even though he was hailing from Andhra Pradesh, in his long acting career he did not act in Telugu or any other South Indian languages, but acted in Hindi,Urdu,Marathi and Gujarati films.
He tried direction and production also.Young Dilip Kumars's second film 'Pratima' was directed by P.Jairaj  in 1945.
He produced and directed film 'Sagar' in 1951.The film did not collect well at the box Office and he had to bear losses in that regard.He was well versed in all aspects of film making such as editing,lab processing etc also.
.'Khoon Bhari Mang' film of Rekha,Rishi Kapoor,Dimple Kapadia was remake of an earlier film of P.Jairaj in which Bharat Bhushan,P.Jairaj and Nargis acted.
He directed films like 'Mohar,Mala(43)Pratima(45),Rajghar,Sagar(51) etc.
He worked with Meena Kumari,Madhubala, and Suraiya when they were child stars and when they became leading ladies also.
His impressive  body figure, emotive dialogue delivery with  an impact,expressive face and dignified movements,speed of actions and his skill in horse riding etc.

were all qualities for him to portray historical legends effectively on the screen.He portrayed historical heroes like  'Rajaputani,Shajahan,Amar Singh Rathod,Veer Durga Das,Pritviraj Chauhan,Rana Pratap,Tippu Sultan,Allauddin,Rana Hameer,Chandrasekhar Azad  and many more.
He was a good organiser and was involved with many films and non-films associations.He organised charity stage shows of film stars and cricket plays of film stars for charity causes.He was organiser for Award shows also.He was fond of dance,music,reading and had keen interest in sports too.In the film field he was endeared to all artists and technicians.He had a long career of seventy years in cinema.


He married a Punjabi girl and he was blessed with six children.
He was recipient of 'Filmfare Lifetime  Achievement Award'.
and 'Dada Saheb Phalke Award'(which is the highest cinema Award in India).
P.Jairaj died on Aug.11, 2000 in Mumbai at the age of 91.

MOTILAL

Motilal Rajvansh, who became popular as Motilal was born on Dec 4 1910 in Simla.He is remembered as one among the first natural actor of Hindi Cinema.
His father died when he was just one year old and he was brought up by his uncle.
He studied at Delhi and after his studies went to Bombay and got the hero role in the film 'Shaher Ka Jadoo' in 1935.
His movies 'Jagirdar,(37), Hum Tum Aur Woh(38),Arman(42), Taqdeer(43),Kaliyan(47)Paigham,Jagte Raho' were all well noted films of acclaim.
He acted in the main roles of several films of late 30's and 40's like 'Shaher Ka Jadoo,Silver King,Do Diwane,Dilawar,Teen Sau Din Ke Baad,Hum Tum Aur Woh' and many more.
In the film 'Do Diwane' which was written by K.M.Munshi, and directed by






Chimanlal Luhar, he acted as Dr.Mohanlal and Shobhana Samardh was the heroine.
In the film 'Teen Sau Din Ke Baad'(1938) he acted as a Millionaire who go out in to the world without taking any money with him and survive for 300 days.
In the film 'Hum Tum Aur Woh' directed by Mehboob Khan two girls love the hero character 'Moti'.
He acted as the hero in the 1949 film 'Ek Thi Larki ' and Meena Shorey was the heroine.Bharat Bhushan,I.S.Johar,Agha also acted in it.
Along with Raj Kapoor and Nargis, he acted in Dhoon(1953) in character role.
In the 1955 blockbuster film of Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala 'Devdas' he acted in a significant role as 'Seth Sewakram'.
In the 1957 film 'Ab Dilli Door Nahin' Motilal acted in the main role as 'Hari Ram'
In the 1959 film 'Anari' directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, he acted in an important role with Raj Kapoor and Nutan.
In the 1960 film 'Parakh' which was a hit film at the box office he was the hero and acted opposite Sadhana. He acted as an innocent  labourer who was accused of a murder.It was directed by Bimal Roy.

DAVID ABRAHAM AND K.N.SINGH

DAVID ABRAHAM

David Abraham was a Marathi speaking character actor of Jewish and Indian descent who worked in large number of Bollywood films.During the 40's and 50's he acted in lead roles  of several films and later shifted to father/uncle role  of hero/heroine.He acted as a Doctor which suited him well in many films.He was also excellent as a host of award shows and functions of such kind.Even Jawaharlal Nehru appreciated him in this regard.
David Abraham Cheulkar was born in the year 1909 and had appeared largely in character roles  in a career which spanned for more than four decades he acted in more than 110 films.He was seen portraying paternal roles mostly.
He is remembered for films like 'Boot Polish,Gol Maal,Baton Baton Mein,Khoob 





soorat,Chupke Chupke' and many more.
In the 1954 film 'Boot Polish'  which was directed by Prakash Arora  he received Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.The song scene 'Nanhe nunhe bachche teri mutti mein kya hai' is still very popular.
In the 1943 film 'Tasveer' he was one of the   the main lead actor.
In the 1945 film 'Ghulami' he was one of the  the heroes   and Renuka Devi and Mumtaz Begum  were the heroines.
In the films 'Pehela Pyar,Justice,Mansarovar,Geet Govind,Doosri Shaadi' he was having prime character roles.

In the 1950 film 'Bahurani' Lalita Pawar and David Abraham  were having pivot roles.
In the 1951 film 'Sansar' directed by S.S.Vasan, David Abraham was in a significant role.
In the 1958 film 'Amar Deep' he acted  as father of Padmini's character 'Roopa'.
In the 1966 film 'Mamta' he acted as a doctor.
In the 1979 film 'Golmal' directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee he acted as the character Dr.Kedar Mama.
David Abraham was recipient of Padma Shri Award from Government of India in 1969.
He was unmarried.He died at Toronto,Canada, due to heart attack on Dec 28 1981.

K.N.SINGH

K.N.Singh was born in Dehradun on 1 Sept 1908 and joined film field as a actor giving up his career as a lawyer in 1937.
He was mostly seen as a 'Villain' costumed in fine suit,wearing a hat and smoking a pipe.He was portrayed as a  'mafia-don' or a 'gentleman masked' culprit.
He acted  in more than 200 films in a career span of six decades.
He died on 31 Jan 2000.

V.SHANTARAM

V.Shantaram, whose original name was 'Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre was born on 18 Nov. 1901, in Kolhapur of Maharashtra State.
He was one of the pioneers in shaping Indian Cinema as it is today and  who was famous as a Producer,Director and Actor.
He produced/directed many films from the silent era itself and continued producing and directing films in sound era also.He effectively used films as a media to deliver message of humanism to the public which helped a lot to minimise social injustice and evils prevailed in the society.
He entered in to film industry by directing his first film 'Netaji Palkar' in 1927.
He founded 'Prabhat Film Studio' with the help pf some of his friends and produced the firs Marathi talkie 'Ayodhyecha Raja' in 1932.
V.Shantaram acted along with his friend Baburao Painter in the film 'Surekha Haran' in 1921.
He acted in some other movies like 'Sinhagad(1923)
Savkari Pash (1925)




Stri (1961)  and Parchchai (1952).
Shantaram was very much fond of music and for his films he gave attention from the writing of lyrics,composing music etc.
He got accolades and appreciation for his films such as 'Dr.Kotnis ki Amar Kahani, (1946), Amar Bhoopathi(1951),Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje(55)
Do Aankhen Barah Haath(57),Navrang  (59),Duniya Na Mane(57)
Pinjra(72)' etc. which are all considered as classic films.
In 1955 he got All India Certificate of Merit  as Best feature film for 'Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje.
In 1955 Presidents silver medal for Best feature film in Hindi for 'Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje'.
In 1957 he received President's Gold medal for the All India Best feature film -Do Aankhen Barah Haath.

CUCKOO MORAY

Cuckoo Moray was an Anglo Indian actress of Bollywood during 40's and 50's . She was better  as a cabaret dancer rather than a character actress.
She was born in 1928 and when  became an actress of Bollywood in the long run, directors and produces noted her proficiency in dancing.Because of her skill in cabaret dance it was included in most of the films of that period and Cuckoo was the unchallenged artist  for that section.But later when   Helen arrived in films they started   healthy competition between them.
Helen was introduced to films by Cuckoo Moray.Cockoo was friend of Helen's family and so she recommended for a role to her.They danced together for films like 'Chalti ka Naam Gaadi'(58).




Cuckoo's last appearance was for film 'Mujhe Jeene Do(1968)
Cuckoo died on Sept 30, 1981 at the age of 53.
She danced in films like 'Anokhi Ada,Andaz,Barsat,Arzoo,Awara,Aan,Mr&Mrs.55 and many more.

BINA RAI

Bina Rai was a popular actress of 50's and 60's who acted in lead female roles of several films.She was a very beautiful and talented actress.
Born as 'Krishna Sarin' on 4 June 1931 at Lucknow,U.P, she lived in Kanpur until becoming an actress.
She participated in a talent contest and was selected as the heroine of film 'Kali Ghata' in which Kishore Sahu acted as the hero.For getting  consent to act in films she went on a hunger strike at home and the parents finally gave her permission.
Bina Rai and Premnath were the leading pair of 1953 film 'Aurat' and during the shooting of the film they fell in love and got married.
They started their own production house and produced films like 'Shagufa' 'Prisoner of Golconda'  'Samunder' etc in which both of them acted as lead pair but none of them  was a success at the box office.As a pair they were not accepted by the audience.She was but well accepted when she paired with Pradeep Kumar in films like 'Durga Nandini,Anarkali' etc.
Ashok Kumar and Bina Rai were the leading pair of the noted film 'Shole'.
The audience also liked when Bina Rai shared with Shammi Kapoor.
Bina Rai was excellent in classic films like 'Anarkali'(53) and 'Taj Mahal'(63).
She gotFilmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in the film 'Ghunghat'(60).
