THILAKAN

Thilakan presented precisely perfect acting skill to the amazed audience for more than six decades in theatre and on Malayalam silver screen.
'Surendranath Thilakan' was born to parents P.S.Kesavan and Devayani of Ayiroor in Pathanamthitta District on 1935 July 15.He started acting career from 1955 onwards.He worked with Professional drama troupes like  Kollam Kalidasa Kala Kendra,Mundakkayam Nadaka Samithi,Sarathy Theatres Trissur etc.
His entry to Malayalam film field was  noticed with the film 'Ulkkadal' in 1979 even though he had brief appearances twice before. He received Kerala State Best Character  Actor award in 1981 for the film 'Yavanika' which was directed by K.G.George.Best character actor award of Kerala Government was given to him five times altogether.He received Best Actor Award from Kerala Government in 1990 for film 'Perunthachan, and in 1994 for films 'Gamanam' and 'Santhana Gopalam'.
In 1988 he received National Award for Best Supporting  actor for film 'Rithubhedam'.He received special mention  for his excellent acting skill in the 
2008 film 'Ekantham' from the National Award Jury.
Thilakan was recipient of 'Padma Shri' award in 2009.
Thilakan presented large number of unmemorable roles in blockbuster films like 'Perunthachan', 'Kireedam', 'Sphadikam' ,  'Pavithram',  'Aniyathi Pravu'
  'Meenathil Thalikettu',  'Sathyam' ,  'Veendum Chila Veettu Karyangal','Manichitrathazhu',   'Moonnampakkam',   'Kuttettan', 'Pallavur Deva Narayanan' etc.
He acted in protagonist roles in films like 'Perunthachan',  'Ekantham',  Kattukuthira',  'My dear Muthachan',  Mukhamudra', 'Santhanagopalam' etc.
As a loving and caring father he received accolades for films like 'Kireedam'
'Ividam Swargamanu'  'Narasimham'   'Sphadikam'  'Pavithram'  etc in which 
Mohan Lal acted as his son.As a father expecting his son to be a Sub Inspector of Police, Thilakan as the Head Constable of film 'Kireedam' earned sympathy from all audience when his son unexpectedly became a criminal.
In the historical film 'Perunthachan' he presented the title  role of Master Craftsman and Sculptor superbly nice that he was affectionately mentioned as the 'Perunthachan' of Malayalam cinema later on.
Thilakan handled protagonist roles,character roles,supporting roles,roles with 
a comedy touch, and villain roles also always with equal perfection.
In the film 'Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal' he showed us the cruelty
of a step-father who tortured an  young girl without any mercy.As the father who worked  against the son was seen in films like 'Kilichundan Mampazham' and 'Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu'.Thilakan received much appreciation for his role in 'Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu'. As the Judge who was rude and harsh always but possessed a loving soft heart, he was loved in the film 'Kilukkam' by all audience.Such a rude and harsh character was handled by him in 'Sphadikam' as the father of 'Adu Thoma' (Mohan Lal).The Mathematician father  was unaware that he was responsible for spoiling his son's life.
Thilakan succeeded to pass on the pain of the Grand Father's character in 
'Moonam Pakkam' to the audience.Thilakan earned hatred of all audience in films 'Jathakam'  'Thaniyavarthanam'  and  'Mayilpeelikavu' by strictly following
the ridiculous beliefs in the society.
As the mental patient in 'Mookkilla Rajyathu' he could create excellent comedy with Mukesh and two others.The opposition leader in the film 'Panchavadi Palam' generated much comedy.'Ananthan Nambiar' of "Nadodikattu"  'The thief role' in dual roles of "Mukhamudra",  'Damodarji'  of "Sanmanasullavarku Samadhanam" are all examples of his comedy skills and versatile excellency.
Unmemorable characters include Journalist of 'Panchagni', Kumaran of 'Pingami',  Title character in 'Vendor Daniel',  the criminal in 'Randambhavam' etc.
Thilakan always came back to the scenario with regained charm whenever faced with setbacks professionally and personally.In 2012 he presented fantastic acting talent in film 'Indian Rupee'.
Thilakam had acted in a few Tamil Films also.
In 2005 Thilakan received Life time Achievement Award from 'Filmfare'  and 
'Kerala Film Critics Association'.'Asianet' presented Lifetime Achievement Award to him in 2001.'Filmfare' presented Best Supporting actor award to him for film 'Indian Rupee' in 2011.







He received 'Bharat Gopi' award' in 2010 and 'Vayalar Rama Varma Award' for Lifetime Achievement in 2011.
This extraordinary acting talent left the arena at 3.35  Monday early morning  on September 24, 2012.He was under treatment in a Private Hospital of Trivandrum.
