M.G.SOMAN

M.G.Soman(1943-1997) was a highly talented actor of Malayalam Cinema. His native place was Kuttoor of Thiruvalla Taluk in Kerala State. He was the son of K.N.Govinda Panicker and Bhavani Amma. After serving in the Indian Air Force for many years he returned and joined a professional drama troupe because of his love towards acting. The 30year old young youth in good physique was very handsome and had good acting skills. The famous novelist and writer Malayattoor Ramakrishnan with his wife happened to see the drama in which M.G.Soman was in lead role and was very much impressed about him.At that time director P.N.Menon was in the lookout for a new face for his new film and so Malayattoor Ramakrishnan, who was friend of P.N.Menon suggested M.G.Soman's name. Thus in 1973 M.G.Soman acted in P.N.Menon's film Gayatri in main role.
Director P.N.Menon who was an artist also made fine movies which drew attention of the critics and masses and so it helped M.G.Soman very much. The film was a big hit.He became famous with the  debut film itself and new offers for other films came in search of him.He did not insist to act as hero only and took villain type roles also but in several films he was hero during those days.Special mention is needed for his 1977 film 'Itha Ivede Vare' in which he was the hero and Jaya Bharathi, the heroine. It was written by famous novelist P.Padmarajan.(Padmarajan later became famous film director ).I.V.Sasi who is another artistically talented director  created  the film 'Itha Ivide Vare' in which Soman handled the role nicely. He got much applause for his efforts and earned good reputation.
Later Soman focused on supporting character type roles other than hero and since he was versatile to act any type of roles confidently took comedy type roles also.He was majestically super in roles like Police Officer and other dignified roles,Successful Businessman, Minister or Politician,Doctor etc.His movements and dialogue presentation was stupendously great. He was careful  to avoid over expressions but to act as if real.Dialogues using sufficient tone change and well balanced stress given to the words with proper efficiency  produced good results.Even in his last film 'Lelam' his character 'Aanakkattil Eappachan' was well accepted. His dialogues in that film is still heard on mimicry stages.Mimicry artists are not teasing him, but trying to imitate him in full admiration. He is still remembered, loved and appreciated by all.
M.G.Soman acted in many films which was directed by Priyadarshan.Director Priyadarshan's films used to be big hits and Soman would be in an important role in those films which he used to act impressively well..As a Doctor and owner of a mental Hospital(Dr.Raveendran) in 'Thalavattam',Jail Superintendent in 'Chitram' Sumitra's
father in 'Mukundetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu',Police Officer in Vandanam  were all  well appreciated roles. Boeing-Boeing was a comedy film of Priyadarshan in which Soman had a good role..In 'Akkare Akkare Akkare' which was  mostly shot in America, the theme was comedy type.  Even though Soman's role was  of a high ranked Police Officer, it created good comedy. In all these films Mohan Lal was the hero.In Number20 Madras Mail which was directed by Joshi Soman had an important villain type role in which Superstars Mammootty and MohanLal appeared together.M.G.Soman acted in so many Mammootty films also.
In I.V.Sasi film 'Eetta' and P.G.Viswambharan film 'Sathyavan Savithri' he acted with Kamal Hassan. The great Kamal Hassan was the hero in those films. In 'Sathyavan Savithri' Sreedevi was the heroine. The film with fine melodious songs was a big hit.Soman's role  was as the companion of the hero and was throughout in that film with much importance.Kamal Hassan and Soman became best friends during the shooting sets of that film and that friendship continued till Soman's death.M.G.Soman had the good quality of making good friendship and maintaining it.Last year  Kamal Hassan arrived in Trivandrum to accept an award for him.In that large award distribution ceremony Kamal Hassan in his speech expressed his grief that his best friend M.G.Soman was not alive.
M.G.Soman was awarded the second best actor award of Kerala Government in 1975 and Best Actor Kerala Government award in 1976.
M.G.Soman was loved by all film workers and Co-Stars and he had many loving friends outside film field. He was loved and respected by all film goers. His untimely death on 12th December 1997 due to Jaundice was a shock to all.
